According to Reuters, several European Commission officials were targeted last year by Israeli spy software Pegasus. Among them was Didier Reynders, a Belgian senior statesman who has been the European Commissioner for Justice since 2019 along with four other members of the commission's staff. The officials targeted by the spy software learned that they had been hacked thanks to messages given by Apple to iPhone users, messages that claimed that they had been targeted by state-sponsored attackers. Up to now it has not been possible to ascertain which state has used this software or what information it has withdrawn. The usual denial came from the Israeli company: the latter in fact claimed that it was not responsible for the hacking attempts. Given the seriousness of the incident, the European Parliament has decided to set up a commission of inquiry relating to all members of the European Union who have been subjected to espionage by the Pegasus software.
